The Surgeonfish

Palau Marine Life Protection

The Thorn Tail Surgeonfish is domiciled in the coral reefs of Oceania and originates from the species of Acanthuridae. It possesses the skill to randomly and rapidly change its colour. Its lively and swift character, by means of a progressive movement, reminds one of a butterfly flashing by. This fish, which is able to grow up to 25 centimetres, is characterised in the riffs by its beauty. It has occupied an inherent part in this brightly coloured coral environment. However this perch breed is very sensitive to influences and environmental changes in it’s surrounding. A yellow spine is used as its defence organ and is situated in a skin fold at the tail root. This spine is similar to a surgeon’s scalpel from which the fish has its name.

The Insular State Palau has dedicated this special sea dweller a votive coin set.
