The Long-eared Jerboa (lat. Euchoreutes naso) is another species that is only to be found in the Gobi Desert. Barely 2-3 cm in size, this little mammal is extraordinary in two distinct ways. On the one hand, it can jump up to 1.5 m in height, i.e. up to 50 times the height of its body. Its long tail helps it to keep its balance while doing so. On the other, its ears are twice as big as its head. These enormous interceptors help the little nocturnal mouse to hunt insects, its favourite meal. Like the Gobi Bear, the almost unknown long-eared jerboa is only on Mongolia’s ‘Red List’ of endangered species. Thanks to a research project the European public has been able to marvel at about a dozen of these fascinating rodents since 2001.
